Molly Abernathy, DVM, Veterinarian and Owner

Dr. Molly Abernathy is the Owner and Veterinarian of Family Pet Hospital in Longmont. She opened Family Pet Hospital in 2015 to fulfill her dream of offering tailored care for dogs and cats in an environment that reduces both the pet’s and the owner’s stress levels. She graduated from Texas A&M University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 2005 and has completed advanced training in emergency medicine, small animal dental care, and veterinary acupuncture. She is particularly passionate about dentistry, dermatology and pain management. When not working with the pets and clients of Family Pet Hospital, Dr. Abernathy spends her time with her three beautiful daughters, her husband, her blind special needs kitty Fern, and, of course, Walter.

Rebecca Cross, DVM, Associate Veterinarian

Dr. Cross, our Associate veterinarian, joins us here at Family Pet Hospital from the same neck of the woods as Dr Abernathy. Dr. Cross grew up in Austin, Texas and graduated in 1997 from Texas A&M University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. She was a general practitioner in Texas for five years before moving to Colorado in 2002 where she practiced emergency medicine for over ten years. In 2012 Dr. Cross earned certification from Colorado State University’s Veterinary Medical Acupuncture program (MAV). Dr. Cross has been married for 21 happy years and has 2 children. Her family is completed with Tipsy, the family’s Pomeranian and Velcro a formerly feral cat that chose to adopt the Cross’ more than the other way around.

Rani Reuter, DVM, Associate Veterinarian

Dr. Rani Reuter, our newest Associate Veterinary, joins us as an experienced and passionate doctor. Dr. Reuter attended the University of California- Davis, where she graduated in 1996 with her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine. She spent her internship in Denver where she was part of the first season of the Animal Planet show Emergency Vets. Dr. Reuter and her husband have three children, three goats, numerous chickens, two dogs, and four cats. In her free time, she enjoys running, hiking, skiing, backpacking, and loves to travel. In practice, Dr. Reuter truly loves being a general practitioner and family doctor. She enjoys the challenge of surgery and the puzzle of internal medicine cases, but especially loves interacting with and educating clients, helping each owner develop the desired relationship they seek with their fur kids.

Sasha Richardson, DVM, Associate Veterinarian

Dr. Sasha Richardson is the third Texas vet to join Family Pet Hospital. She grew up in Houston and graduated from Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2003. She spent the first twelve years of her career working as a general practitioner at a small animal clinic in Loveland. As her family grew she transitioned to relief work at hospitals throughout Northern Colorado, which led her to Family Pet Hospital. She fell in love with the practice and is excited to set down roots surrounded by such a caring and talented team of professionals. She loves the diversity of work she is able to do as a general practitioner and enjoys establishing lasting relationships with the clients and pets she tends to. When not at work Dr. Richardson enjoys gardening, being active outdoors and spending time with her husband of twenty-two years, her four amazing children, and her dog Marley and two cats, Phil and Anthony.

Talyn-Headshot-2022

Talyn, Lead Veterinary Nurse

Talyn joined Family Pet Hospital after closing the book on two years of corporate veterinary care to pursue a more personal and individualized hospital environment. She graduated from Colorado State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology in 2018, but her passion and love for animals started in her adolescent years. Most of her summer days were spent volunteering at animal shelters, pet sitting for family and friends, and spending time with her childhood dog, Benny, who she happily loved for 15+ years. Talyn currently shares her home in Loveland with her boyfriend and one-eyed Labrador Retriever named Zoey and rescue kitty Parmesan . Her life away from the hospital is often spent gardening, reading, and hiking.

Fern, Veterinary Nurse

Meet Fern! A Texas native, like both Dr. Abernathy and Dr. Cross, Fern’s love for animals developed at a young age. Having volunteered at the Houston Zoo for three years as a teenager, Fern pursued a career in the field of veterinary medicine at an early age as a kennel technician and has been employed professionally in the field for almost a decade now. Through her experience in emergency veterinary medicine and small animal hospitals, Fern fostered a passion for fear free vet techniques that help ensure any patient she encounters has the best experience possible while visiting their veterinarian. At home, Fern and her husband Kody are surrounded by their beloved rescue animals including their two kitties Ivan and Ahsoka, their German shepherd mix, Rem and Winter, her happy-go-lucky lab that keeps everyone grounded.

Her pack is constantly outside hiking, riding bikes or just simply hanging out in their backyard.

Alexis, Veterinary Nurse

Lex is a Florida native who grew up surrounded by animals; if it walked on four legs and stumbled onto their farm, it had a home. Spending her early years volunteering in a small town animal shelter and playing nurse to strays that came through, Lex discovered her passion for veterinary medicine. Turning that passion into a career, Lex began her journey in veterinary medicine in Client Care where she honed her love for small and exotic animals. Over the years, Lex transitioned from Client Care to Nursing and loves every aspect- though she has a soft spot for her frosted faced patients. When Lex is not at work, she can be found with her sidekicks Goose, a 5-year-old miniature Schnauzer, Paws a Maine-Coon and her beloved black and white kitty, Ouija, binge watching reality tv and looking for the perfect pancake recipe.

Walter, Chief Feline Officer

Walter came into Dr. Abernathy’s life in Lubbock, Texas when he was about 9 weeks old. She took one look at him and fell in love. He was “raised” by her black lab, Isaac, and her chocolate lab, Anna. While he interacted with the other cats in her home, he always felt he was closer to the canine species. After years of “ruling the roost,” he decided to bring his love of dogs and people to Family Pet Hospital. Now he is in charge of warming office chairs, greeting clients, helping dogs understand how cats are in charge, and being an Instagram star.
