Molly Abernathy, DVM, Veterinarian and Owner
Dr. Molly Abernathy is the Owner and Veterinarian of Family Pet Hospital in Longmont. She opened Family Pet Hospital in 2015 to fulfill her dream of offering tailored care for dogs and cats in an environment that reduces both the pet’s and the owner’s stress levels. She graduated from Texas A&M University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 2005 and has completed advanced training in emergency medicine, small animal dental care, and veterinary acupuncture. She is particularly passionate about dentistry, dermatology and pain management. When not working with the pets and clients of Family Pet Hospital, Dr. Abernathy spends her time with her three beautiful daughters, her husband, chocolate lab Anna, her three-legged kitty Gertrude, her blind special needs kitten Fern, and, of course, Walter.
Rebecca Cross, DVM, Associate Veterinarian
Dr. Cross, our Associate veterinarian, joins us here at Family Pet Hospital from the same neck of the woods as Dr Abernathy. She was a general practitioner in Texas for five years before moving to Colorado in 2002 where she practiced emergency medicine for over ten years. Talyn joined Family Pet Hospital after closing the book on two years of corporate veterinary care to pursue a more personal and individualized hospital environment. She graduated from Colorado State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology in 2018, but her passion and love for animals started in her adolescent years. Most of her summer days were spent volunteering at animal shelters, pet sitting for family and friends, and spending time with her childhood dog, Benny, who she happily loved for 15+ years. Talyn currently shares her home in Loveland with her boyfriend and one-eyed Labrador Retriever named Zoey and rescue kitty Parmesan . Her life away from the hospital is often spent gardening, reading, and hiking.
Coley, Veterinary Nurse
Coley hails from the northwest; having been raised on a dairy farm, tending to animals is second nature to her. After high school and four years in the military, Coley’s passion for animals led her to the veterinary field first as a receptionist then as a nurse assistant, and finally a veterinary nurse the position she currently holds here at Family Pet Hospital. As a new resident of Longmont, CO, when Coley is not at the hospital, she enjoys exploring all Colorado has to offer with her boyfriend, her two Labrador retrievers Macey and Lucy, and her cat Dwight.
Fern, Veterinary Nurse
Meet Fern! A Texas native, like both Dr. Abernathy and Dr. Cross, Fern’s love for animals developed at a young age. Having volunteered at the Houston Zoo for three years as a teenager, Fern pursued a career in the field of veterinary medicine at an early age as a kennel technician and has been employed professionally in the field for almost a decade now. Through her experience in emergency veterinary medicine and small animal hospitals, Fern fostered a passion for fear free vet techniques that help ensure any patient she encounters has the best experience possible while visiting their veterinarian. At home, Fern and her husband Kody are surrounded by their beloved rescue animals including their two kitties Ivan and Ahsoka, their German shepherd mix, Rem and Winter, her happy-go-lucky lab that keeps everyone grounded.
Kimi, Veterinary Nurse
Like Marissa, Kimi is a Longmont native. Kimi began her career in shelter medicine seeing to the needs of Longmont’s more forgotten animals while simultaneously accomplishing a lifelong dream of working in veterinary medicine. At Family Pet Hospital, Kimi brings nearly seven years of experience and an unparalleled passion for helping clients understand the more complex nature and needs of their pets. When not at work, Kimi spends time with her husband and young daughter and their three rescue animals; D-Dog and Juicebox and their elderly kitty Booda.

Tessa, Veterinary Assistant and Client Care Professional
Tessa was born and raised to work in the Veterinary field seeing as her mom is a Veterinarian herself. Growing up in a small town in Kansas, Tessa spent time at her mother’s clinics as a kennel technician and eventually a veterinary assistant. Tessa joined Family Pet Hospital after her and her boyfriend decided to take a risk and move to Colorado this past Spring. When she is not at work, you can find Tessa paddleboarding, hiking, and swimming and spending time with her two dogs and cat.

Kimberly, Client Care Professional
Originally from the midwest, Kimberly has made Colorado her home for the past eighteen years. With degrees in both Computer Science and Psychology, Kimberly made the switch from the corporate world and recently found a home in the veterinary field where she is able to feed her passion for helping animals while also interacting with clients and helping to improve the lives of both pet and owner. When she is not working, she enjoys spending time with her daughter, their puggle Chloe and cat Albus.
Melissa, Client Care Professional

In 2001, she completed veterinary technician school in Phoenix, Arizona, and has worked in the field ever since. Melissa has four dogs: Two snuggly shihtzus, Bookie and Poppy; Clover, a crazy Springer spaniel; and–keeping her on on her toes–a terrier mix named Gary.
Walter, Chief Feline Officer
Walter came into Dr. Abernathy’s life in Lubbock, Texas when he was about 9 weeks old. She took one look at him and fell in love. He was “raised” by her black lab, Isaac, and her chocolate lab, Anna. While he interacted with the other cats in her home, he always felt he was closer to the canine species. After years of “ruling the roost,” he decided to bring his love of dogs and people to Family Pet Hospital. Now he is in charge of warming office chairs, greeting clients, helping dogs understand how cats are in charge, and being an Instagram star.
