Molly Abernathy, DVM, Veterinarian and Owner
Dr. Molly Abernathy is the Owner and Veterinarian of Family Pet Hospital in Longmont. She opened Family Pet Hospital in 2015 to fulfill her dream of offering tailored care for dogs and cats in an environment that reduces both the pet’s and the owner’s stress levels. She graduated from Texas A&M University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 2005 and has completed advanced training in emergency medicine, small animal dental care, and veterinary acupuncture. She is particularly passionate about dentistry, dermatology and pain management. When not working with the pets and clients of Family Pet Hospital, Dr. Abernathy spends her time with her three beautiful daughters, her husband, chocolate lab Anna, her three-legged kitty Gertrude, her blind special needs kitten Fern, and, of course, Walter.
Rebecca Cross, DVM, Veterinarian
Dr. Cross, our Associate veterinarian, joins us here at Family Pet Hospital from the same neck of the woods as Dr Abernathy. Dr. Cross grew up in Austin, Texas and graduated in 1997 from Texas A&M University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. She was a general practitioner in Texas for five years before moving to Colorado in 2002 where she practiced emergency medicine for over ten years. In 2012 Dr. Cross earned certification from Colorado State University’s Veterinary Medical Acupuncture program (MAV). Dr. Cross has been married for 21 happy years and has 2 children. Her family is completed with Tipsy, the family’s Pomeranian and Velcro a formerly feral cat that chose to adopt the Cross’ more than the other way around.
Walter, Resident Cat
Walter came into Dr. Abernathy’s life in Lubbock, Texas when he was about 9 weeks old. She took one look at him and fell in love. He was “raised” by her black lab, Isaac, and her chocolate lab, Anna. While he interacted with the other cats in her home, he always felt he was closer to the canine species. After years of “ruling the roost,” he decided to bring his love of dogs and people to Family Pet Hospital. Now he is in charge of warming office chairs, greeting clients, helping dogs understand how cats are in charge, and being an Instagram star.
Chani, Lead Veterinary Nurse
Chani has had a passion for veterinary medicine since she was five years old. Her experiences with a variety of family pets, including dogs, cats, horses, and “pocket pets” fueled her interests even further. Born and raised in Colorado Springs, Chani moved to northern Colorado for college, earning a Bachelor’s degree in biology and a Master’s degree in microbiology and immunology. With seven years of veterinary technician experience, Chani has particular interests in veterinary dentistry and preventative care. In her spare time, Chani enjoys cooking, outdoor activities such as hiking, skiing, fishing, gardening, and horseback riding. Chani currently has six “fur babies” including Chevy, a three pound Pomeranian; Sofia, an adopted chinchilla; Polly and Katniss, two previously feral cats; and two guinea pigs.
Brittany, Veterinary Nurse
Brittany grew up wrangling wildlife in the Pacific Northwest near the Canadian border. She received her Bachelors of Science in biology and chemistry in 2008 from Elon University in North Carolina. Since graduation, Brittany has lived in Oregon, Arizona, and Colorado working as a zookeeper, artist, and a veterinary nurse–including two years working exclusively as a specialty nurse in neurology. In her free time Brittany loves to go camping, snowboarding, watch movies, and read. Brittany continues to do her artwork in her spare time, painting wildlife and pet portraits. Brittany has two cats, Maddie and Evie, and a tortoise named Ollivander!
Jessica, Veterinary Nurse, CVT
Jessica is a veterinary nurse and Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT). She has been part of the Family Pet Hospital team since it opened in 2015. Originally from Montana, she moved to Colorado in 2003 to attend Colorado State University. After college, Jessica worked in biomedical research until she decided she wanted to work in the veterinary field. She received her Associate’s degree in veterinary technology from Front Range Community College. She is very happy to have made that decision and loves taking care of our furry friends. Jessica and her husband have a smiley little girl, and one sweet dog named Abbey.
Andrea, Veterinary Nurse Assistant
Andrea has been around animals her entire life. After graduating from Metropolitan State College in Denver with a biology degree, she fell in love with working in the animal medicine field. Andrea competes in dog shows and performance events during her spare time. She has two boys, a retired show cocker spaniel named Mickey, a pet dachshund named Jake and her current show dog, a Belgian Tervuren named Teller.
Sarah, Client Relations Manager
Sarah is a proud Colorado native and graduate of University of Northern Colorado. Before bringing her passion for animals to Family Pet Hospital, she ran her own pet sitting business, tending to the fur babies of Longmont, Johnstown, Frederick and Firestone. When not working, Sarah can typically be found at a Rockies game or checking out a new local hot spot with family and friends.
Christina, Client Care Professional
Christina was born and raised in southern Florida but has called Colorado home for the past seventeen years. She has been actively working in veterinary medicine for more than eighteen years. She loves having the opportunity to get to know clients and share her passion for vet medicine. When not working Christina enjoys spending time with her husband, her son and her fur babies including a labrador retriever and two guinea pigs.
Melissa, Client Care Professional
Melissa has been involved in the animal care and veterinary fields for her entire professional career. In 2001, she completed veterinary technician school in Phoenix, Arizona, and has worked in the field ever since. Melissa has four dogs: Two snuggly shihtzus, Bookie and Poppy; Clover, a crazy Springer spaniel; and–keeping her on on her toes–a terrier mix named Gary.
