Molly Abernathy, DVM, Veterinarian and Owner
Dr. Molly Abernathy is the Owner and Veterinarian of Family Pet Hospital in Longmont. She opened Family Pet Hospital in 2015 to fulfill her dream of offering tailored care for dogs and cats in an environment that reduces both the pet’s and the owner’s stress levels. She graduated from Texas A&M University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 2005 and has completed advanced training in emergency medicine, small animal dental care, and veterinary acupuncture. She is particularly passionate about dentistry, dermatology and pain management. When not working with the pets and clients of Family Pet Hospital, Dr. Abernathy spends her time with her three beautiful daughters, her husband, chocolate lab Anna, her three-legged kitty Gertrude, her blind special needs kitten Fern, and, of course, Walter.
Dr. Ala Niedzwiedzki, Associate Veterinarian
Dr. Ala Niedzwiedzki, Dr. Ala for short, grew up in Boulder Colorado, and received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at the University of Madison, Wisconsin, where she graduated in 2015. Her love of vet medicine is based in her passions for animal welfare and science, along with a desire to nurture the human-animal bond. She builds her practice philosophy on gentle, low stress patient handling, client education, and providing a standard of excellence in medical care. Dr. Ala’s interests include soft tissue surgery, internal medicine, preventive medicine, and dentistry, and she has a soft spot for feline medicine as well, so don’t hesitate to bring your cat family member in to see her! In her free time, Dr. Ala enjoys hiking, traveling, watching stand-up comedy, and painting.
Rebecca Cross, DVM, Veterinarian
Dr. Cross, our Associate veterinarian, joins us here at Family Pet Hospital from the same neck of the woods as Dr Abernathy. Dr. Cross grew up in Austin, Texas and graduated in 1997 from Texas A&M University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. She was a general practitioner in Texas for five years before moving to Colorado in 2002 where she practiced emergency medicine for over ten years. In 2012 Dr. Cross earned certification from Colorado State University’s Veterinary Medical Acupuncture program (MAV). Dr. Cross has been married for 21 happy years and has 2 children. Her family is completed with Tipsy, the family’s Pomeranian and Velcro a formerly feral cat that chose to adopt the Cross’ more than the other way around.
Rachael, Practice Manager
Rachael, Family Pet Hospital’s Nurse Manager, has been a Veterinary Nurse for almost 21 years. She began her veterinarian medicine career as a receptionist then quickly transitioned to a nurse position. After receiving her Veterinary Technology Degree in 2002 her passion for learning and teaching led her UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital where she taught veterinary students and nurses alike. Rachael is a published author, completing articles for Veterinary Nursing journals and has experience in emergency and specialty animal healthcare with a focus in anesthesia, neurology and critical care. Rachael is a perfect fit for Family Pet Hospital where she can utilize her Fear Free Elite certification. The low stress and no stress techniques she has employed for years play an integral part in the day to day operation of Family Pet Hospital and she is so grateful to be working with a staff that understands and embraces these ideals. Away from Family Pet Hospital, Rachael enjoys spending time with her husband and daughter as well as her two dogs, cat and chickens, all of whom she adores!
Sarah, Client Relations Manager
Sarah is a proud Colorado native and graduate of University of Northern Colorado. Before bringing her passion for animals to Family Pet Hospital, she ran her own pet sitting business, tending to the fur babies of Longmont, Johnstown, Frederick and Firestone. When not working, Sarah can typically be found at a Rockies game or checking out a new local hot spot with family and friends.
Marissa, Veterinary Nurse
The hospital’s only home-grown Longmont local, Marissa joined the family in January of 2019. Marissa, a veterinary nurse and Certified Veterinary Technician, graduated from Longmont High School, then attended Eastern Wyoming College where she earned a degree in Applied Science. Marissa brings seven years of veterinary technician experience to Family Pet Hospital. In her free-time, she enjoys spending time with her four fur babies including two cats; Star and Caesar and two dogs; Hendrix and Abelard.
Talyn, Veterinary Nurse
Talyn joined Family Pet Hospital after closing the book on two years of corporate veterinary care to pursue a more personal and individualized hospital environment. She graduated from Colorado State University with a B.S in Zoology in 2018, but her passion and love for animals started well into her adolescent years. Most of her summer days were spent volunteering at animal shelters, pet sitting for family and friends, and spending time with her childhood dog, Benny, who she happily loved for 15+ years. Talyn currently shares her home in Loveland with her boyfriend and one-eyed Labrador Retriever named Zoey. Her life away from the hospital is often spent gardening, reading, and hiking.
Andrea, Veterinary Nurse Assistant
Andrea has been around animals her entire life. After graduating from Metropolitan State College in Denver with a biology degree, she fell in love with working in the animal medicine field. Andrea competes in dog shows and performance events during her spare time. She has two boys, a retired show cocker spaniel named Mickey, a pet dachshund named Jake and her current show dog, a Belgian Tervuren named Teller.
Coley, Veterinary Nurse Assistant
Coley hails from the northwest; having been raised on a dairy farm, tending to animals is second nature to her. After high school and four years in the military, Coley’s passion for animals led her to the veterinary field first as a receptionist then as a nurse assistant, the position she currently holds here at Family Pet Hospital. As a new resident of Longmont, CO, when Coley is not at the hospital, she enjoys exploring all Colorado has to offer with her boyfriend, her two Labrador retrievers Macey and Lucy, her boxer Bo and her cat Dwight.
Christina, Client Care Professional
Christina was born and raised in southern Florida but has called Colorado home for the past seventeen years. She has been actively working in veterinary medicine for more than eighteen years. She loves having the opportunity to get to know clients and share her passion for vet medicine. When not working Christina enjoys spending time with her husband, her son and her fur babies including a labrador retriever and two guinea pigs.
Melissa, Client Care Professional
Melissa has been involved in the animal care and veterinary fields for her entire professional career. In 2001, she completed veterinary technician school in Phoenix, Arizona, and has worked in the field ever since. Melissa has four dogs: Two snuggly shihtzus, Bookie and Poppy; Clover, a crazy Springer spaniel; and–keeping her on on her toes–a terrier mix named Gary.
Walter, Chief Feline Officer
Walter came into Dr. Abernathy’s life in Lubbock, Texas when he was about 9 weeks old. She took one look at him and fell in love. He was “raised” by her black lab, Isaac, and her chocolate lab, Anna. While he interacted with the other cats in her home, he always felt he was closer to the canine species. After years of “ruling the roost,” he decided to bring his love of dogs and people to Family Pet Hospital. Now he is in charge of warming office chairs, greeting clients, helping dogs understand how cats are in charge, and being an Instagram star.
